When should I use "mix up" vs. "mess up"?

These two phrasal verbs sound similar, but they mean different things:

๐Ÿ”„ Mix up = confuse one thing or person with another

I always mix up their names.
Oops - I mixed up Tuesday and Thursday.

โŒ Mess up = make a mistake or do something badly

I deleted some important slides and messed up the presentation.
Don't be afraid to mess up - mistakes are part of learning.

Choose the correct phrasal verb:

  1. I ________ the recipe and the food tasted terrible.
  2. You forgot your wife's birthday?! You really __________.

Many phrasal verbs are easy to confuse because they look similar, but have completely different meanings. Learning them in context makes them much easier to remember.
