Learn new vocabulary from a short story:

Read this paragraph and see if you can understand the highlighted words from the context:

When Daniel started his new job, he was overwhelmed by everything he had to learn. His manager reassured him that everyone feels that way at first and suggested keeping a notebook for new information. By the end of the month, Daniel had gotten the hang of the software, and his coworkers even started asking him for help. Looking back, he realized that what had seemed intimidating at first had simply become part of his daily routine.

overwhelmed = feeling like you have too much to do or deal with

  • I was overwhelmed by all the logistics of moving across the country.

reassured = made someone feel less worried

  • My doctor reassured me that everything was fine.

gotten the hang of = become comfortable or skilled at doing something

  • When I moved to England, it took me a few weeks to get the hang of driving on the left side of the road.

intimidating = making you feel nervous because something seems difficult or scary

  • Speaking in front of a large audience can be intimidating.
